Microsoft Entra Agent ID is an identity and access management layer for AI agents. It lets organizations manage, govern and secure agent identities and their access to resources much as they do for employees, using identity, lifecycle and access controls. Each agent receives a built-in identity that supports authentication, policy enforcement and integration with existing organizational policies. Its capabilities are included for agents managed by Microsoft Agent 365, and they are also available as part of the Microsoft 365 E7 offering.
Security architects, identity administrators and IT leaders at larger organizations are the target users, especially those who see agents multiplying across teams and need to stop uncontrolled sprawl. Teams that already run Microsoft Entra for workforce identity will recognize the admin center, conditional access, identity governance and identity protection controls, now applied to agents. Compliance owners can use lifecycle management, sponsorship and IT-defined guardrails to keep track of who created an agent and who is accountable for it.
An administrator can register agents, review their templates, tasks and logs from one place, and assign sponsors who answer for each agent. Conditional access checks every access attempt and can block agents that show anomalous behavior or are tied to risky users, while identity protection flags suspicious agent interactions for response. Network controls add visibility and unified access policies for traffic to resources. A company rolling out dozens of internal copilots and automation agents can retire unused agent identities on schedule, keeping the attack surface smaller and audits simpler.
