Anthropic Just Revealed Claude Mythos

Nobodylovesyou · 1w ago · 96 views

I think the Claude Mythos thing Anthropic announced is a pretty big deal.

They’re basically framing it as their most powerful model yet, but they’re not releasing it publicly in the normal way. Instead they’ve put it behind this closed cybersecurity program, Project Glasswing, and only a small number of organizations get access.

And the claims around it are kind of wild. They’re saying it found serious vulnerabilities across major operating systems and browsers, including a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD and a 16-year-old issue in FFmpeg. If it’s really that strong, that’s already a pretty serious jump.

What stood out to me most is that it apparently wasn’t trained specifically to be a cybersecurity model. That’s the part that feels bigger than just “they made a really good cyber model.” It sounds more like the model got so strong at reasoning, coding, and autonomous problem-solving that these capabilities showed up as a side effect. That’s honestly the more unsettling part to me.

Also, it’s not even clear if Mythos will ever be released publicly. Anthropic isn’t exactly saying “never,” but this definitely doesn’t feel like something they plan to turn into a normal public product anytime soon. It feels more like they wanted to show what they’ve built while keeping the actual model behind a wall.

And that raises a bunch of questions for me.

Is keeping a model like this locked down actually the right move, or is it just delaying what’s coming anyway?

Do OpenAI, Google, and the others eventually do the same thing with their strongest systems?

And if this is where things are going, are we heading toward a world where the most capable AI models are only available to big companies and a small circle of approved partners?

I don’t know. Feels like one of those moments that might look bigger in hindsight. Curious what other people think.
